Dear Reader,

The ASIAN STUDIES WWW MONITOR
(including all its subsidiary (and/or sister) pages on "coombs.anu.edu.au" server) has permanently ceased its publishing operations on Friday 21st January 2011.

All of the online resources reported here have been thoroughly checked at the time of their listing. However, it is possible that, with the with the passage of time, many of the originally reported materials might have been removed from the Internet, or changed their online address, or varied the scope and quality of their contents.

Fortunately, in several cases it is possible to access many of the older versions of the resources listed in the MONITOR. This can be easily done via the free services of the "The Internet Archive" http://web.archive.org/, a remarkable brainchild of Brewster Kahle, San Francisco, CA.

- with warm regards -

Editor, Dr T. Matthew Ciolek.

The SAT Daizokyo Text Database

The SAT Daizokyo Text Database Committee, Dept. of Indian Philosophy
and Buddhist Studies, Graduate School of Humanities and Sociology,
University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan.

Self-description:
"Humanity's repository of the Buddhist wisdom: the full text of 85 volumes of Taisho Shinshu Daizokyo [...], is now available on-line. [...] The SAT Daizokyo Text Database Committee opens this data for public use with the full approval of Daizo Shuppan Kabushiki Kaisha, the original publisher of the Taisho Shinshu Daizokyo."

Supplied-note:
"[...A]s a scholar of Daoism and early medieval Chinese Religion - I would like to recommend [...] websites [listed below] not only for the obvious use of locating citations from religious scriptures, but because they can function as the much needed but not available 'dictionary' for the often obtruse and undocumented language used in early medieval texts. A parallel search in contemporary texts from the Buddhist Canon and the Daoists canon more often than not clarifies the meaning of difficult words and expressions and helps to contextualize them at the same time.

The site of the 'Taisho Daizokyo' allows full text searches of the Buddhist canon as well as of specified parts of it. [...]
While the complete 'Daozang' to my knowledge is not yet searcheable online, the Academia Sinica has 21 volumes out of 60 - and in particular many of the early medieval texts in the 'Daozang', in a searcheable full text database.

This is the list of the Academica Sinica database. Somewhere in the middle of the list is the link to the 'Zhengtong daozang' database. It is quite strong on pre-Tang scriptures. The menu has an option to show several levels of the titles - clicking 2 in the title box gets the list of all the texts contained on the screen.
And last but not least, with a much more limited number of texts, but containing such useful things as the 'Yunqi qijian', 'Daojiao Yishu' and more, and very fast and great to use is the database of some texts from the 'Daozang' on the Dokisha homepage:

Page references are to the standard edition of the Zhentong Daozang, while the 'Academia Sinica' website mentioned before refers to the 60 vol. Taiwanese edition. - fa."
